Royal Art / Freemasonry

Freemasonry calls itself the Royal Art, and its symbols still come from stonemasons' tools — the square, the compass, the level — because the earliest lodges really were guilds of working builders. What changed, sometime in the 1600s and 1700s, was that the tools became metaphors for building something else.
