In 1614, a pamphlet appeared in Germany announcing a secret brotherhood devoted to hidden knowledge — the Rosicrucians. No one has ever proven the order existed before the pamphlet did. That didn't stop real societies from forming in its image for the next four centuries. 

A myth substantial enough to become real.
