Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach's reconstruction of Solomon's Temple, seen from the slopes of Mount Moriah — the whole sanctuary and its courts raised upon a vast arcaded substructure, the most visually extraordinary Temple reconstruction ever published. Built from the vision of Ezekiel and the scholarship of Villalpando, who drew its proportions from scripture in the belief that architecture itself could encode sacred knowledge.
