Remember you must die — the phrase a slave was said to whisper to a Roman general at the height of his triumph, so pride wouldn't outrun perspective. Renaissance painters built entire vanitas scenes around the same idea: a skull on the table, an hourglass losing its sand, flowers already wilting.
Not a warning. A frame. Mortality, worn as a reminder to actually live.
